Gas Detection
Specialist detection for LPG, hydrogen, oxygen, methane, toxic gases, refrigeration and acetylene and confined space environments, with fixed and portable systems tailored to your site.
Gas detection is an essential safety measure in any environment where gas is used, stored, or produced. At Gas & Marine Equipment, we supply, install, and maintain both fixed and portable gas detection systems designed for environments where early warning can prevent serious harm.
We work with a range of clients across hospitality, industrial, and public sectors, helping them manage risk, stay compliant, and protect their people.
Gas & Marine Equipment is an active member of the Gas Detection Association of Southern Africa and stays up to date with developments in gas safety regulation.
At present, gas detection is only mandatory in cases where un-stenched LPG is used. In all other situations, installation is optional but must still meet recognised international standards if requested by the end user.
In response to growing demand across industries, several gas bodies—together with the SABS—are currently working to assess the need for formal South African gas detection standards (SANS). While this process is still underway, it remains critical that any gas detection system used is reliable, fit for purpose, and meets the highest available safety and quality benchmarks.

Fixed Gas Detection Systems
Fixed gas detectors are permanently installed in areas where gas is regularly used or stored, and where leaks may go unnoticed without continuous monitoring.
These systems detect the presence of hazardous gases and can be linked to alarms, automatic shut-off valves, fire panels, or GSM alerts, depending on the site’s requirements.
They are commonly used in:
-
Commercial kitchens and restaurants
-
Hotel boiler rooms and basements
-
Car parks and underground facilities
-
Laboratories, perfume rooms, and mixing areas
-
Factory production floors
-
Sewer lines, tunnels, and other confined service areas
Each system is selected and installed based on the environment and type of gas in use. We ensure proper placement, calibration, and integration where needed, so the system performs reliably under real-world conditions.
Portable Gas Detectors
We supply portable gas detectors for use in environments where fixed systems aren’t practical, typically by staff entering confined or high-risk areas. These handheld units offer real-time monitoring and immediate alerts for dangerous gas levels, helping prevent serious incidents before they occur.
They are commonly used in:
-
Refineries and fuel handling sites
-
Utility tunnels and underground worksites
-
Maintenance chambers and pump stations
-
Construction zones with limited airflow
These detectors measure:
-
Low oxygen levels
-
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)
-
Flammable gases such as propane, butane, and methane
-
Carbon monoxide
Each unit is chosen based on the expected gas risks on site and can be calibrated as needed. We also assist with guidance on selection and ongoing maintenance to keep devices reliable and compliant.
Our Services
Our gas detection offering includes:
- On-site assessment and planning
- Supply of approved gas detection equipment (fixed and portable)
- Professional installation
- Calibration and ongoing servicing
- Integration with fire panels and GSM alert systems where required
We only work with equipment that meets relevant safety and compliance standards and do not cut corners during installation or testing
What We Don’t Do
- Supply or install uncertified detection units
- Install systems without conducting a proper on-site risk assessment
- Modify or bypass building fire panel systems unless done in coordination with a qualified fire safety contractor
