Gas Systems for Residential, Commercial & Industrial Use. Plus Marine Electronics For Private Boats.

Trusted Gas & Marine Experts

Gas & Marine Equipment is an independent supplier and installer of high-quality gas systems and marine electronics. With decades of hands-on experience in the South African gas industry, we focus on practical solutions for residential, commercial, and light industrial applications.

The business was founded by Rowan Oberholzer, a technician with nearly 30 years of experience across gas supply, instrumentation, and product integration. What began as a specialised gas installation service has evolved to include advanced gas detection systems, top-tier gas geysers, and selected marine electronics. We work directly with homeowners, developers, factories, restaurants, and boat owners who want systems that are reliable, well-designed, and properly maintained.

We do not take on work that falls outside our technical scope, and we do not sell low-end equipment to win on price. Our focus is on doing the job correctly, using equipment that lasts, and supporting clients with advice they can trust.

Gas Systems

We specialise in the supply, installation, and configuration of gas geysers for both homes and commercial spaces. Most of our geyser work is focused on high-end systems that provide better temperature control, fuel efficiency, and longevity than cheaper entry-level models. We also handle full installations for larger residential or multi-unit developments where gas geysers, gas stoves, and fireplaces are specified as part of the build.

For commercial and industrial clients, we design and install gas systems for schools, gyms, dairies, and other facilities where multiple points of hot water or gas usage are required. We can work with ring main systems set temperature controlled systems.

Gas Detection

Our gas detection division has grown significantly in recent years. We supply and install both fixed and portable gas detection systems in environments where gas leaks, low oxygen, or hazardous vapours pose a risk. This includes:

  • Restaurants and hotels

  • Car parks and underground facilities

  • Laboratories and factories

  • Confined space worksites such as tunnels and sewage systems

  • Perfume and chemical processing sites

We offer complete service from initial site assessment to equipment supply, installation, calibration, and integration with existing fire detection systems if required.

Marine Electronics

While gas systems form the core of our business, we also work with a select range of boating and marine equipment. This includes the installation of:

  • Battery systems and chargers
  • Fish finders
  • Trolling motors
  • Basic navigation instruments

We take on smaller, focused marine projects where we can deliver quality work without overselling unnecessary add-ons.

FAQ

We've Got The Answers

Do you only work with gas?

No. While gas systems are our primary focus, we also install a limited range of marine electronics such as fish finders, battery systems, chargers, and navigation equipment. We only take on marine work where we can do the job properly and avoid overservicing.

Do you work with all types of gas?

We primarily work with LPG, propane, and butane. These are the gases most commonly used in domestic, commercial, and industrial environments. We also work with specialty gases like hydrogen, oxygen, methane, toxic gases, refrigeration and acetylene.

What areas do you cover?

We are based in KwaZulu-Natal and work with clients across South Africa.

Can you repair or install gas stoves and fireplaces?

We don’t take on one-off jobs like repairing gas stoves or installing individual fireplaces unless it’s part of a larger build or development project. For example, we’ll install 20 gas stoves for a developer but won’t come out to fix one unit in a home. This helps us stay focused on jobs that align with our equipment, licensing, and availability.

What’s the difference between the gas geysers you supply and cheaper ones?

The geysers we supply are high-end models with digital control systems. They allow for precise temperature settings, better fuel efficiency, and don’t require constant manual adjustment. Cheaper models often lack these features, use more gas over time, and require mixing cold water to make the temperature usable.

Do you offer compliance certificates?

Yes. All gas installations are done according to current regulations, SANS 10087-1 2024 edition 7, and we provide the required certificates of compliance where applicable.

What’s included in a gas detection installation?

We assess your site, recommend the right equipment, install it, and calibrate the system. If needed, we also connect it to your existing fire panel or set it up to send GSM alerts. Ongoing servicing and recalibration are available by arrangement.

Do you sell portable gas detectors?

Yes. We supply portable gas detectors for use in confined or high-risk spaces such as tunnels, refineries, or underground maintenance areas. These are essential for measuring oxygen levels and identifying harmful gases like H₂S, LEL, oxygen or carbon monoxide.
